Synopsis

Francesca Bianchi applies for welfare subsistence to help support her children. She is visited by a young social worker, Miss Drinkwater, the "welfare lady," who interviews Francesca to determine if she is eligible. Miss Drinkwater is new on the job and very nervous, doing her best to cope with the difference between her idealistic notions of social work and the harsh reality of life in an Italian-American ghetto. A comic/tragic scene ensues between Francesca and Miss Drinkwater. What results is a moment of love and compassionate understanding of each other's helplessness. One int. set
